Orange

Fresh Florida oranges are available September through June thanks to early-, mid-, and late- season types. The most popular Florida varieties are Navel, Hamlin, Pineapple, Ambersweet, and Valencia. Oranges flavor well with basil, chocolate, cinnamon, ginger, mangoes, olives, pecans, strawberries and vanilla. One medium orange provides more than 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of immune-boosting Vitamin C for children and 70 percent for adults. Choose fruit that is firm and heavy for its size. Skin blemishes or discolorations do not affect the interior quality of the orange. Keep in the refrigerator. When juicing, first roll the fruit on a hard surface to help release the juice. Oranges peel easily if first placed in boiling water for 30 seconds, then removed and cooled.
